The Prime Minister met with members of the Black Christian Leaders’ Forum (BCLF) today to discuss building stronger black communities.
At a round table discussion in 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister pledged support for their work and urged them to continue helping to build stronger communities. He said:
"We need to unlock the talent that exists in our communities, encouraging young people, even when they feel disengaged, that they have something to contribute. Lets get the message across that together we can build a stronger society. What you do is not just recognised in your own communities - its appreciated throughout the whole country."
The PM went on to ask the BCLF to work with the Government to achieve the Millenium Development Goals:
"Education for all children and eradication of diseases that kill unnecessarily. What we have in common is not only what we do here in the UK but also our responsibility, because of our shared moral sense, to the rest of the world."
The group also discussed a number of issues including commemoration of the abolition of slavery, building confidence in the criminal justice system, funding of youth services, and next steps after the Reach report, which targets the raising of aspirations and attainment of black boys and young men.
