Access10 - epetition response

We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to remove the stepped approach to 10 Downing Street to create equal access for disabled people.”

Details of Petition:

“To carry out a feasibility study with a view to removing the stepped changes in level leading to the main entrance at 10 Downing Street. This to allow visitors an equal access experience, to remove the symbolic barrier to Government and give out a clear message that the Prime Minister believes that disabled people have a place in polictics.”

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to sign this e-petition.

The Prime Minister’s Office is aware of the difficulties encountered by disabled users of the building, including wheelchair users, and has a strategic objective to improve access to and within Downing Street for all users of the building.

A feasibility study has been completed, examining the obstacles to good access and to identify feasible measures to improve access within the constraints of this Grade 1 listed building.

The proposals identified in the study, including the options for providing level access via the No 10 front door, are now in the design development stage and the Prime Minister’s office is working with an access consultant and plans to take these forward as part of our rolling programme of repair, renovation and modernisation of the Downing Street complex.

Progress to date has included dropped kerbs in the Street, ramped access improvements within the building and we will continue to introduce further improvements under the modernisation programme in consultation with Westminster City Council and English Heritage.
