The PM moved quickly between three key events at the UN high-level summit on development late yesterday.At a press briefing for the Global Campaign on Health group Gordon Brown announced a $1 billion plan to fund improvements in local health care and cut maternal and infant deaths in developing countries.
The PM will co-chair a new task force with Robert Zoellick of the World Bank to oversee progress on the initiative.
Next, at a discussion forum on malaria, the PM and other leading figures endorsed a new action plan that includes a cash injection of $1.1 billion from the World Bank to eradicate malaria deaths entirely by 2015.
Finally, Mr Brown joined the launch of Education for All: Class of 2015, a new effort to realise the Millennium Development Goal of getting all children into education by 2015. The PM signed a book pledging his commitment alongside other leaders and figures such as Queen Rania of Jordan and U2 singer Bono.
