The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Dr Eurwyn Wiliam as Chair of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales for a period of 5 years to 31 December 2013 and Dr Mark Redknap and Professor Christopher Williams as Commissioners for a period of five years to 31 October 2013.
Biographical details
Eurwyn Wiliam has a degree in Archaeology, an MA in Vernacular Architecture and Building Conservation and a Ph.D. which was on the traditional farm buildings of north east Wales. He has worked in various departments of the National Museum of Wales since 1971. He has been Director of Collections and Research and Deputy-Director General at National Museum Wales since 1999. He was a Commissioner of the Royal Commission from 1992-2002 and Vice-Chair from 2002-2006. He was a member of the Historic Buildings Council from 1992-2003. Dr William is a fellow of the Society of Antiquities of London and is an acknowledged authority on the post-medieval social and industrial history of Wales, he is a very experienced manager with a broad range of expertise relevant to the work of the Commission.
Dr Mark Redknap has a degree and a Ph.D in Archaeology. He worked for the Passmore Edwards Museum, London, as an Assistant Curator (Archaeology and Local History) from 1983-1988. He has been Curator of Medieval and Later Archaeology at Amgueddfa Cymru ─ National Museum Wales since 1988. He was Head of the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics at National Museum Wales from 2004-2005. He was a member of the Council of the Society of Antiquities of London from 2001-2005 and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Historic Wreck Sites from 1996-2005. He has extensive expertise in the area of Marine Archaeology and in leading teams within museums and in archaeological fieldwork.
Professor Christopher Williams has a degree and Ph.D. in Modern History. He has been the Professor of Welsh History and Director of the Centre for the History of Wales and its borderlands at Swansea University since 2005. From 2001-2004 he was Professor of History and Director of the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Wales at the University of Glamorgan and was a lecturer in History at Cardiff University from 1998-2001. Professor Williams has expertise in the areas of Celtic Studies and Post-medieval (industrial) Heritage.
