Notes to Editors
The Imperial War Museum was founded in 1917 to record the story of the Great War. Its remit has subsequently been extended to cover the Second World War and all military operations involving Britain or the Commonwealth since August 1914. Its goal is to enrich people’s understanding of the causes, course and consequences of modern war. The Museum’s collections, in addition to artefacts, include a major national art collection, a film and video archive, extensive archives of documents, photographs and sound records, and an important specialist reference library. Its trustees are not remunerated.
The appointment process has followed the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for political activity in the past 5 years (if any declared) to be made public. Dame Judith has declared that she was a politically independent Common Councillor of the Corporation of the City of London from 1986-2004, and has undertaken no political activity in the last five years.
