New Chairman of the National Audit Office

The Prime Minister is pleased to approve the appointment of Professor Sir Andrew Likierman as the new Chairman of the National Audit Office.

Sir Andrew Likierman is Professor of Management Practise in Accounting at the London Business School, a non-executive director at the Bank of England and Barclays Bank Plc; and senior independent director, Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. He is a former President of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. 

Between 1993 and 2003, Sir Andrew had a distinguished career at the Treasury as Head of the Government Accountancy Service and Managing Director of its Financial Management and Reporting Directorate.  Following his appointment as Chairman of the National Audit Office, Sir Andrew will step down from the Court of the Bank of England.

The appointment of Sir Andrew as the National Audit Office chair is the first stage in the process of implementing the recommendations of the review of corporate governance in the National Audit Office by the Public Accounts Commission (a Select Committee of the House of Commons), in its report of 6 March 2008 (HC 402).  The Government agreed to included necessary legislation in the Constitutional Renewal Bill, which will be presented to Parliament (in due course).

The Chair of the National Audit Office is appointed by agreement between the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts (Edward Leigh MP).  Mr Leigh chaired the appointment panel, with Nicholas Macpherson (HMT Permanent Secretary) representing the Prime Minister and Tim Burr (currently Comptroller & Auditor General) as an independent panellist.¼/p>
