Afternoon press briefing from 16 December 2008

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s spokesman on: Glasgow/London terrorist attacks and Mumbai terrorist attack

Glasgow/London Terrorist Attacks

Asked for the Prime Minister’s reaction regarding the conviction of the man involved in the Glasgow and London attempted bombings in June 2007, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that we welcomed the fact that those who had committed these crimes had been brought to justice, and the Prime Minister praised the work of the police and others involved in bringing them to justice.

Asked if there was particular concern that the man convicted in this case was a doctor, the PMS said that at the time there had been a review undertaken by Lord West looking at practices relating to NHS recruitment, and a number of measures were taken as a result of Lord West’s review in order to tighten up recruitment procedures.

Asked if the Prime Minister saw these particular cases as part of the “chain of terror” he had been talking about over the last few days, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had been talking generally about the large proportion of terror plots aimed at the UK that had some link back to Pakistan, and particularly the Pakistan/Afghanistan border region.

Mumbai Terrorist Attack

Asked for the Prime Minister’s view regarding the British police being refused access to the surviving suspect of the Mumbai terrorist attack by the Pakistani authorities, the PMS said that we were still trying to get to the bottom of the point being raised by Pakistan, as the suspect was being held by the Indian authorities, not the Pakistani authorities.
