PM thanks third sector workers

Gordon Brown has sent a message of thanks to all those who work in the third sector for the “vital role” they play in the life of the nation.

In a Downing Street statement, the PM said that voluntary and charity organisations were “the glue that binds communities together”. The Government will support the sector in helping the nation through the current economic downturn and all its challenges, he said.

The PM said:

“I am immensely proud of Britain. The scale of the challenges we face is matched by the strength of my optimism that Britain can rise to meet them.

“Never is this fighting spirit and can-do attitude more clearly demonstrated than by the commitment, dedication, care, compassion and genuine heroism of the people from all walks of life who volunteer their time and their energy to help those who find themselves in need at Christmas.”

Mr Brown said he wished to send a simple “thank you” to everyone who had “made a difference” to their community in the past year.
