Gaza needs “immediate ceasefire” - PM

The Gaza strip during Israeli military operations in January 2009; PA copyright. The Prime Minister has called for greater efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza strip and for a resolution to the issues dividing Gazans and Israelis.

Speaking to the press today, Mr Brown said that the conflict in the Gaza strip had reached a “dangerous moment” and that there was “grave concern” around the world about the violence. Mr Brown said he understood the need for humanitarian aid to get through to Palestinians in Gaza but also Israel’s need for reassurances that there will be an end to rocket attacks on Israeli towns from within the enclave.

The PM said:

“We need an immediate ceasefire, and that includes a stopping of the rockets into Israel. Secondly, we need some resolution of the problem over arms trafficking into Gaza and, thirdly, we need the borders and the crossings open and that will need some international solution.”

The PM’s words came as hostilities continued with Israel sending land forces into Gaza on Saturday.
