The PM praised the winners for their commitment to initiatives such as flexible working arrangements, childcare and working from home schemes and said that family-friendly working policies were vital for increasing productivity and retraining skilled employees.

The PM said:

“It’s great that so many employers have positive views about promoting work-life balance and that more and more managers are actively promoting flexible work practices.  I hope to see even more companies following in your footsteps.”

Minister for Women Harriet Harman helped to judge the awards, set up by Take a Break and Jobsfor mothers.com, and joined the PM in meeting the winners and nominees, along with a number of mums who have benefited from having supportive employers.

The Government announced in May 2008 that it would extend the right to request flexible working to parents with children aged 16 and under, benefiting an extra 4.5 million parents. A pledge to extend free nursery places for two-year-olds was also announced in September last year.
