Endo-definition - epetition response

We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to reclassify the DWP description so that endometriosis is no longer described under the heading of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.”

Details of Petition:

“The DWP describes endometriosis as part of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, a sexually transmitted disease. http://www.dwp.gov.uk/medical/med_conditions/minor/pelvic/ This information is completely incorrect. The cause of endometriosis is not known, but it is NOT sexually transmitted and you can NOT catch it. The DWP is perpetuating a damaging and uninformed myth that endometriosis sufferers have caused their own illness. It is irresponsible and insulting that the DWP portrays endometriosis in this way. We petition the government to categorise endometriosis under its own heading with correct information.”

The Department issues medical guidance to Disability Living Allowance Decision-Makers. This guidance gives background information on medical conditions and the likely disabling effects.

Endometriosis was included in the section on Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which stated that these diseases were often sexually transmitted.

Following representations, the authors of the guidance removed endometriosis from the Pelvic Inflammatory Disease section and it is now has its own entry. These changes were published in November 2008.
