PM calls for a “green new deal”

<div class=”rightfloat”> </div>The PM has called for a “global green new deal” which he hopes will pave the way for a low carbon economic recovery.

Gordon Brown spoke at the Royal Society in London this morning to launch the Low Carbon Industrial Strategy which he said would “help us build tomorrow’s green economy today”.

Mr Brown was joined at the event by Business and Energy Secretaries Peter Mandelson and Ed Miliband.

Speaking about the new Low Carbon strategy pamphlet published today the Prime Minister said:

“Today, we are publishing independent research which shows that in Britain, as a result of the frameworks we have put in place, we can expect 400,000 new environmental sector jobs over the next eight years - with a total of 1.3 million people employed in these sectors by 2017.”

Gordon Brown, Peter Mandelson and Ed Miliband also met and answered questions from business leaders.

The summit was called to map out the UK’s industrial priorities for taking advantage of the new global low carbon economy.
