Downing Street to take part in Earth Hour

Number 10 will be doing its bit for the planet on Saturday by joining in with WWF’s Earth Hour.

Millions of institutions, members of the public and even tourist attractions around the world will be switching off or dimming their lights between 20:30 and 21:30.

Lighting in 10 Downing Street will be kept to a minimum during the switch off in the UK’s time zone, and the few lights that are needed will be dimmed as much as possible.

The Prime Minister praised the support already being shown for Earth Hour, which will be held around the world for the second time this year.

He said:

“It shows just how passionately people feel about tackling climate change and sends out a clear message that the world is ready to take action. It’s a bold and fitting signal because from individual households to entire nations, we all have a part to play and we all need to take action.”

Alongside its efforts for Earth Hour, Number 10 also tries to keep its environmental footprint to a minimum throughout the year.

More than 350 light fittings in the house have already been switched to energy efficient bulbs, 100% of general waste is segregated for recycling and old appliances are routinely replaced with Energy Saving Recommended versions.
