Gordon Brown met some of the first people in the UK taking advantage of the Government’s car scrappage scheme today.
The Prime Minister and Business Secretary Peter Mandelson spoke to car buyers and staff at a Nissan dealership in north London to mark the launch of the scheme.
From today, car owners will be able to scrap cars and small vans more than 10 years old and get £2,000 off the price of a new vehicle.
It is hoped the scheme will boost the UK car industry and take older vehicles off the road in favour of newer, safer and potentially greener cars.
Speaking at the dealership, the Prime Minister said that the Government expects about 300,000 people to take advantage of the deal.
He said:
“It’s a good deal in terms of lower cost. It’s also going to be a great help to the British car industry and it’s part of our programme of getting the economy moving forward… I believe that with the response to this scheme already, it’s very popular with the public.”
Thirty-eight manufacturers have signed up to take part in the scheme. Manufacturers will provide half of the discount, while Government will provide the other £1,000.
Lord Mandelson said:
“I am delighted by the response of the motor industry. Thirty-eight companies have signed up - all the major UK car manufacturers and a number of other companies. This means more choice for consumers and a boost for British brands.”
