The Prime Minister has added his voice to a campaign to get thousands of messages of support for Aung San Suu Kyi to mark her 64th birthday on 19 June.
The Burmese pro-democracy campaigner was due to be released from house arrest today after spending more than 13 of the past 19 years in detention.
Instead she is on trial in Rangoon for violating the terms of her imprisonment and could face a further five years in prison.
The campaign, 64 words for Aung San Suu Kyi, aims to put pressure on Burma’s military regime to release the Nobel Peace prize winner before the Burmese elections, scheduled for next year.
The Prime Minister said:
I add my voice to the growing chorus of those demanding your release. For too long the world has failed to act in the face of this intolerable injustice. That is now changing. The clamour for your release is growing across Europe, Asia, and the entire world. We must do all we can to make this Birthday the last you spend without your freedom.
