The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend James William Scobie Newcome MA, FRSA, Suffragan Bishop of Penrith, for election as Bishop of Carlisle in succession to the Right Reverend Geoffrey Graham Dow, MA, BSc, MSc, MPhil, who resigned on 30 April 2009.

The Right Reverend James Newcome (aged 55) after a first degree in history at Trinity College Oxford studied for the ordained ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and achieved First Class Honours in the Cambridge Theology Tripos. He served his curacy at Leavesden in St Albans Diocese from 1978 to 1982. He subsequently became Priest-in-Charge, then Vicar at Bar Hill in Ely from 1982 to 1994. From 1983 to 1988 he was also a Tutor at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and Priest-in-Charge at Dry Drayton, Ely from 1989 to 1994. From 1993 to 1994 he was Rural Dean of North Stowe. From 1994 to 2002 he was Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary in Chester and Diocesan Director of Ordinands. From 1996 to 2002 he was also Director of Education and Training. Since 2002 he has been Suffragan Bishop of Penrith.
James Newcome is married to Alison and they have four children.
His interests include cross-country running and the restoration of old furniture.
