The Burmese pro-democracy activist is facing trial for violating the terms of her house arrest and could face a prison term of up to five years.

She has already spent 13 of the past 19 years under house arrest.

The former political prisoners come from over 20 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. They have signed a special 64 word message to mark Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday on Friday.

“The continued denial of your freedom unacceptably attacks the human rights of all 2,156 political prisoners in Myanmar. As those also incarcerated for our political beliefs, we share the world’s outrage. We call on the United Nations Security Council to press the Myanmar Government to immediately release all political prisoners, and to restrict the weapons that strengthen its hand through a global arms embargo.”

The former political prisoners are also calling for the United Nations Security Council to establish a global arms embargo on Burma.

Last month the PM released his own 64 word message:

“I add my voice to the growing chorus of those demanding your release. For too long the world has failed to act in the face of this intolerable injustice. That is now changing. The clamour for your release is growing across Europe, Asia, and the entire world. We must do all we can to make this Birthday the last you spend without your freedom.”
