PM offers to attend climate change summit

The Prime Minister has said he would personally attend the climate change summit in Copenhagen to ensure a successful outcome.

The Prime Minister is the first major world leader to say he would attend the summit which is aimed at securing agreement on worldwide cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

The summit, starting on starting on 7 December 2009, is formally for environment ministers, not heads of government, but Mr Brown has said that he would join the talks and urge other world leaders to follow suit.

Writing in Newsweek magazine, Mr Brown said there was a “grave danger” a deal would not be reached - an outcome he said would be “unforgivable”.

“I have been gratified by the response of many countries, both in public and in private. But we need to move now toward securing an agreement in Copenhagen. I believe it can be done. And if it is necessary to clinch the deal, I will personally go to Copenhagen to achieve it-and will be urging my fellow leaders to do so too.”

Mr Brown will fly to New York this week to meet other world leaders, including President Obama, at a UN meeting aimed at giving momentum to tackling climate change.
