The Prime Minister has taken questions from the public on issues such as anti-social behaviour and the Government’s Justice Seen Justice Done programme today.
Gordon Brown, Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Communities Secretary John Denham visited the Rich Mix arts centre in Shoreditch to take part in a question and answer session hosted by Talksport Radio.
Mr Brown said there were three areas that should be focused on in the attempt to tackle anti-social behaviour: reducing public fear of this type of crime; providing more support and information to victims; and using the Family Intervention Programme to work with problem youths.
Responding to a comment from a Talksport Radio listener about rights and responsibilities, the PM said that it was important that young people recognised that they had responsibilities towards society.
He said:
“People talk about their rights but let’s talk about people’s responsibilities as well. We have a got a fast-moving, very mobile society and there are a lot of influences on young people these days… We have got to assert that people don’t just have rights - they have responsibilities as well.”
Earlier, the PM held a roundtable discussion with local Community Crime Fighters and authorities in Tower Hamlets working to stop anti-social behaviour.
Justice Seen Justice Done is a cross-Government programme which aims to address public concerns about crime and justice. It includes the Policing Pledge and the Community Payback scheme, where the courts can sentence offenders to carry out unpaid work which benefits communities, such as cleaning up graffiti.
