The Cabinet in the East Midlands

The Prime Minister has promised to focus on getting young people back into work and training during the economic downturn, and tackling anti-social behaviour and crime in communities.

Gordon Brown was speaking at the opening of an engagement event in Nottingham, where members of the Cabinet answered questions from the public on a range of topics.

Earlier in the day the PM visited a family intervention project at Bulwell Hall Healthy Living Centre in Nottingham and Stephenson College in Leicester.

Mr Brown said in future, he aims to make parents take more responsibility for the behaviour of their children by introducing parenting orders.

He also said the Government will ensure that job opportunities or training are available for young people struggling to find work.

“We want to hear your views so that we never have a generation of young people which is without hope and without the prospect of jobs even though we are facing one of the greatest global recessions that we have seen.”

During the regional Cabinet meeting in Nottingham, the Regional Minister for East Midlands, Phil Hope, briefed Cabinet on the challenges and the progress in the region. Environment Secretary Hilary Benn then gave an update by phone on the situation in Cumbria.

Other topics discussed at the Cabinet included the improving efficiencies in public services, the Smarter Government event, crime and anti-social behaviour and social care.
