Prime Minister unveils Thatcher portrait

Baroness Thatcher with her portrait; Crown copyrightThe Prime Minister unveiled a new portrait of Lady Thatcher in Downing Street this afternoon.

Margaret Thatcher returned to Number 10 to attend the unveiling at a private reception hosted by Gordon Brown.

The portrait was painted by Richard Stone, one of Britain’s leading portrait artists, to commemorate the historic nature and length of Lady Thatcher’s premiership.

The painting will be on permanent display in Downing Street.

About the artist

Richard Stone is one of Britain’s most celebrated portrait artists. He has painted Lady Thatcher on a number of occasions and has also painted portraits of the Queen, the Queen Mother and Prime Ministers Harold Wilson and James Callaghan.
