The Queen has approved that Andreas Whittam Smith Esq be appointed First Church Estates Commissioner in succession to John Sclater Esq CVO.

Biographical note
Andreas Whittam Smith was born in 1937. The son of a parish priest, Mr Whittam Smith was educated at Birkenhead School, Cheshire and Keble College, Oxford. After a period with N. M Rothschild, much of his career has been spent in the City in journalism, including as City Editor of The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, and as Editor of the Investors Chronicle and Stock Exchange Gazette. Mr Whittam Smith was a founder and first editor of The Independent newspaper from 1986 to 1993 and Chief Executive and Chairman of Newspaper Publishing Plc.
Andreas Whittam Smith is currently Chairman of the Financial Ombudsman Service Ltd, a Director of Independent News and Media (UK), Vice Chairman of Tunbridge Wells Equitable Friendly Society, also a Vice President of the National Council for One Parent Families. He is also President of the British Board of Film Classification, a post from which he now intends to resign.
Andreas Whittam Smith is married and has two children. His recreations include music, films, history and walking.
