Royal Commission for Historical Manuscripts

The Queen has approved the reappointment of The Rt Hon Lord Bingham of Cornhill as Chairman of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts. Lord Bingham has been reappointed for a three year term, with effect from 1 December 1999.

Lord Bingham has served as Lord Chief Justice of England since 1996. He has not undertaken any significant political activity over the last five years. Commissioners do
not receive remuneration.

Biographical Notes

The Rt Hon Lord Bingham of Cornhill was first appointed to the Commission on 1 December 1994 for a term of five years. He has been Lord Chief Justice of England since 1996. A former master of the Rolls and a Privy Councillor since 1986, Lord Bingham is currently a Trustee of the Pilgrim Trust and President of the Seckford Foundation. He was a member of the Advisory Council on Public Records, the Magna Carta Trust and the British Records Association from 1992-6 and has held several honorary University positions. Lord Bingham is a strong believer in the essential value of archives to our society and is particularly interested in their administrative and legal roots.

Notes to the Editors

The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts aims to locate and record manuscripts, records and archives (apart from public records), and to advise on their preservation and storage and to assist those wishing to use them.

Appointments to the Commission are made by HM The Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister following advice from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
