The Prime Minister personally answered text messages from the public at a special event at 10 Downing Street today.
During the 40-minute session, Tony Blair responded to a range of questions on a variety of international and domestic topics.
Some of the subjects raised included Iraq, law and order, terrorism, the housing market and climate change. He was also asked on his all-time rock super group and the new Band Aid single.
Asked whether the Iraq war was necessary, the Prime Minister said:
"Yes, I believe it was. Despite the difficulties Iraq will become democratic and the world is safer without Saddam."
Mr Blair said that he would be announcing more on what the Government will be doing to reduce the problems from drugs this afternoon.
He said that as part of the new plans suspects will be tested for drugs and would be offered treatment if they test positive. If the offer were declined, they would receive harsher treatment from the criminal justice system.
Asked if there was one thing he would like his time as Prime Minister to be remembered for, he said:
"A whole series of things. One particular thing but not the thing would be to change the schools system radically so that children get the results they need."
More than 5,000 texts were sent in for the event organised by mobile phone company, 02.
