31 January 2005

The Prime Minister is addressing a special summit on community regeneration today.

Two thousand delegates are expected to take part in the Delivering Sustainable Communities event, which is being held in Manchester.

The conference will deal with the regeneration of derelict areas, focusing on how to make them safe and clean and create good transport links and job opportunities.

A host of Government ministers will be attending.  Key speakers during the three-day event include Gordon Brown, Charles Clarke, Margaret Beckett and Ruth Kelly.

The mayors of London and Chicago will also be there, as well as English Heritage commissioner and author Bill Bryson. It is being hosted by TV presenter Nick Ross.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said:

"Creating sustainable communities is not just about bricks and mortar. It calls for creative partnership and an integrated approach to delivering communities that people want to live and work in."
