A new marketing campaign is aiming to increase the number of tourists from China to the UK.
The aim is to attract upwards of 200,000 visitors a year by 2010.
A Chinese-language website has been created to provide information about coming to Britain and the attractions on offer.
Extra training will be provided to travel agents in China while their British counterparts will also receive guidance on how to welcome and look after Chinese visitors.
The marketing campaign follows the signing last month of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments, awarding the UK ‘approved destination status’.
This means the UK can be marketed in China as a holiday destination, and tour groups of travellers booking through approved agencies will be able to come to the UK as tourists.
Chancellor Gordon Brown launched the ‘Britain Welcomes China’ campaign on a tour of the region to promote business relations.
In a speech yesterday in Beijing the Chancellor said there was a ‘growing and deepening partnership’ between China and Britain.
Trade had grown by 230 per cent, he said, and the UK is the largest European investor in China - putting in almost $20 billion per year.
