Universities targeted by ‘virtual’ crimewave

8 March 2005

Mobile phone theftStudents who leave handbags or mobiles on show are in for a shock today.

Undercover teams of ‘thieves’ are targeting libraries and union buildings on campuses across the UK to remind youngsters that they can help crack crime.

If they find possessions unguarded - a phone left on a desk or a bag abandoned underneath a table - they will place a ‘virtually stolen’ sticker on it.

When the owner returns the ‘thief’ will provide advice on what they can do to avoid becoming a victim of crime for real.

It is estimated that one in three university students are victims of crime each year - and robbery and mobile theft are the most common incidents.

To reinforce the Virtually Stolen activity, students will be given posters and postcards with advice on personal safety and how to secure their homes against burglars.

They will also be given a checklist of things to look out for when choosing a property to rent.
