Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales

Following the retirement of The Right Honourable Lord Woolf as Lord Chief Justice for England and Wales, The Queen has been pleased to approve that The Right Honourable the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers be appointed Lord Chief Justice for England and Wales, The Right Honourable Lord Justice Clarke be appointed Master of the Rolls, and The Right Honourable Lord Justice Judge be appointed President of The Queen’s Bench Division. Lord Woolf retires on 30 September and the new appointments will take effect from 1 October 2005.

Biographical Note:

Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers (67) was called to the bar in 1962, took silk in 1978 and was appointed a Recorder in 1982. He was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court in 1987, and then to the Court of Appeal in 1995. In 1999 he was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and in 2000 he was appointed Master of the Rolls.

Lord Justice Clarke (62). Sir Anthony Clarke was called to the bar in 1965, took silk in 1979, and was appointed a Recorder in 1985. He was promoted to the Queen’s Bench Division in 1993 and to the Court of Appeal in 1998.

Lord Justice Judge (64). Sir Igor Judge was called to the bar in 1963, became a Recorder in 1976 and took silk in 1979. He was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division in 1988 and promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1996.

Notes for Editors:

Lord Justice Judge is to be the first President of the Queen’s Bench Division. This new Heads of Division post was created as a in the Constitutional Reform Act 2005. Prior to that Act, the Lord Chief Justice presided over the Queen’s Bench Division in addition to his other responsibilities.
