17 December to 24 December

Here we reflect on some of the main business carried out by Tony Blair this week, the last few working days before Christmas.

"Europe has to move on"

Tony Blair speaks to MPs about the EU Council meeting 19 December 2005Following the Budget deal which was finalised last weekend, the PM reported back to the House of Commons on the outcomes of the EU Council. 

He said the European finance deal was "essential" for all Europe, a point he re-inforced the following day when he told MEPs in Brussels that there was "nothing to fear" from an enlarged Europe. Later, the PM met with the McCartney sisters who are campaigning for justice for their dead brother.

Seasonal visit to the troops

Tony Blair is greeted in Basra 22 December 2005It was the last monthly Downing Street press conference on Wednesday. The PM looked back at the successes of the year but said 2006 would be a time to "push ahead" with reform of the public services.

Mr Blair made a surprise Christmas visit to Iraq where he met with British troops and held meetings with senior military personnel.  In a radio interview, he said the world was "proud and grateful" for the work the UK’s armed forces were carrying out there.
