Look back at the PM’s week

Proposed changes to incapacity benefit will help more people get back to workLaunching welfare reforms this week, Tony Blair said they would remove the "tragedy" of people becoming dependant on incapacity benefits. People out of work due to illness will be offered more support under proposals which focus on "what people can do rather than what they can’t". Make sure you see our new Welfare section.

Tony Blair at PMQs 25 January 2006In his monthly Downing Street press conference the Prime Minister answered a wide variety of questions on topics including the Education White Paper and city academies as well as the Iraqi elections. Tony Blair also faced MPs for his weekly PMQs with questions on Scotland, education, children’s playgrounds and violence against women.

A forum for change

An audience at Lambeth Palace listen as the PM addresses the launch event of the Christian Muslim ForumOn Wednesday the PM spoke at the formal launch of the Christian Muslim Forum, a new interfaith group which brings together a wide range of people involved in community life. He also led tributes to the influential Muslim cleric Dr Zaki Badawi, who died earlier this week. Mr Blair sent his best wishes to the Chinese community during their New Year celebrations.

Important meetings

Tony Blair and Bertie AhernThe Prime Minister met the Amir of Qatar at Downing Street before heading to Dublin to hold talks with Bertie Ahern.  Mr Blair urged that efforts to restore Northern Ireland’s assembly must make significant progress during 2006. Later, Tony Blair joined survivors of the Nazi death camps and their rescuers at a remembrance service in Cardiff on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day.
