10 out of 10 for new icon

10 Downing StreetThe home of Tony Blair and his office, 10 Downing Street, was this week nominated as an "English icon" by a new website. The organisers hope to assemble what they call "a snapshot of life in England in the twenty first century". Make sure you vote!

Meanwhile, NATO, the European Union and international trade were on the agenda when Iceland’s Prime Minister Halldor Asgrimsson visited the PM at Number 10.

Helping hard-working families

Tony Blair at his monthly Downing Street press conference 23 February 2006 At his monthly Downing Street press conference, Mr Blair fielded questions on a wide range of subjects including public sector reform, which he said would "improve the lives of Britain’s hard-working families".

He also expressed his sadness over the attack on the Askariya Shrine in Samarra, which the PM said was aimed at "derailing democracy".

Later in the day the PM met Russian business people, parliamentarians and academics for a round-table discussion aimed at finding ways to improve the UK-Russia relationship.

Schools minister Jacqui Smith Tony Blair this week spoke about the forthcoming Education Bill which will, he said, "make good schools excellent, average schools good and for those that are failing, give them a new lease of life".
