PM marks Armed Forces Day

The Prime Minister has praised the work of the armed forces ahead of today's Armed Forces Day, an annual opportunity for the nation to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces.

Across the country people are getting involved with events both locally and nationally in honour of our serving troops, veterans and their families.

David Cameron addressed members of the Royal Navy aboard HMS Ark Royal in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Thursday to pay tribute to the work of the Armed Forces. With Armed Forces Day approaching, Mr Cameron said his visit was intended to highlight “how much we owe our armed services - our Air Force, our Royal Navy, our Army - for everything that you do to keep us safe”.

The PM added:

As far as I am concerned, public service is a vital part of our country, and you are at the noblest end of public service. A great military commander once said that those things we do for ourselves, die with us; those things we do in the service of others, they live forever. That is what you do in the Royal Navy; that is what you do in our armed services.

I am here as the new British Prime Minister to say a very big thank you for your service, your dedication, your courage.

The Prime Minister is in Canada to attend the G8 and G20 Summits.
