The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend James Henry Langstaff, MA, Suffragan Bishop of Lynn, for election as Bishop of Rochester in succession to the Right Reverend Michael James Nazir-Ali, BA, MLitt, PhD on his resignation on the 31st August 2009.

James Langstaff (aged 53) was educated first at Saint Catherine’s College, Oxford and then at Nottingham University. He trained for ordination at St John’s College, Nottingham. He began his ordained ministry in 1981 as a curate at Farnborough, in the diocese of Guildford. In 1986 he was first Priest-in-Charge at Duddeston with Nechells, in Birmingham diocese and in 1987 he became Vicar of the same parish. From 1995 to 1996 he was Rural Dean of Birmingham City. From1996 to 2000 he was Bishop of Birmingham’s Domestic Chaplain. From 2000 to 2004 he was Rector of Sutton Coldfield Holy Trinity in the diocese of Birmingham and from 2002 to 2004 he was Area Dean of Sutton Coldfield. Since 2004 he has been Bishop for Lynn in the diocese of Norwich. He is Chair of Housing Justice, the Churches’ national voice for housing and homelessness.
James Langstaff is married to Bridget and they have two grown-up children. His interests include golf, cricket, skiing, travel, theatre, music, cooking and entertaining.
