Lord West reappointed as a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum
The Prime Minister has reappointed Admiral the Lord West of Spithead as a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum. His second term of appointment will run from 1st July 2010 to 30thJune 2014.
Biographical Detail
Lord West was First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff between 2002 and 2006. During his career Lord West served in 14 different ships and commanded three of them, including HMS Ardent which was sunk during the Falklands Campaign in 1982. Following various appointments with NATO, he organized the Royal Navy’s response in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States. He is Chancellor of Southampton Solent University. From 2007 to 2010 Lord West served as Government Minister for Security.

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) was founded in 1917 to record the story of the Great War. Its remit has subsequently been extended to cover the Second World War and all military operations involving Britain or the Commonwealth since August 1914. The IWM is a war museum rather than a military museum: it tells the story of modern war, people’s experience of war and its impact on society in Britain and the Commonwealth. It is an educational institution responsible for archives, collections and sites of outstanding national importance. It is a single institution with a single purpose, fulfilled in different ways at its different branches, both physical and virtual.
Trustees of the Imperial War Museum give their services on an honorary basis but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
This reappointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Reappointments and appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
