Sir Miles Irving reappointed as a Trustee of The Imperial War Museum
Sir Miles Irving, Trustee of The Imperial War Museum, has been reappointed.
The Prime Minister has reappointed Sir Miles Irving as a Trustee of The Imperial War Museum, for 4 years from 1 December 2010.
Biographical Notes
Professor Sir Miles Irving was Chairman of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust until September 2006. He is Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Manchester; was a Visiting Professor of Surgery at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne; and a Trustee of the Newcastle Healthcare Charity. He is Chairman of Health Innovations and Education Cluster (North); Chairman of the Order of St John in the North East; a Member of Council, University of Newcastle upon Tyne (and Chair of the Ethics Committee and member of the Audit Committee); and a former Honorary Consultant Surgeon to the Army. He was formerly a member of Council and Court of the University of Manchester and was a founder member of Salford Health Authority Ethics Committee and founder Chairman of the Northumbria University Ethics Committee.

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) was founded in 1917 to record the story of the Great War. Its remit has subsequently been extended to cover the Second World War and all military operations involving Britain or the Commonwealth since August 1914. The IWM is a war museum rather than a military museum: it tells the story of modern war, people’s experience of war and its impact on society in Britain and the Commonwealth. It is an educational institution responsible for archives, collections and sites of outstanding national importance. It is a single institution with a single purpose, fulfilled in different ways at its different branches, both physical and virtual.
Trustees of the Imperial War Museum give their services on an honorary basis but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
The reappointment process has followed the OCPA Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in selection or reappointment processes. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for political activity in the United Kingdom in the past five years (if any declared) to be made public. Sir Miles has declared no political activity.
