The Prime Minister has extended the term of Dame Marjorie Scardino as a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) by 12 months from 7th February 2011 to 6th February 2012.

Biographical Notes
Dame Marjorie Scardino has been Chief Executive of Pearson, the international education and media business made up of Pearson Education, Penguin and the Financial Times Group, since January 1997. Until January 1997, she was chief executive of The Economist Group (of which Pearson owns 50%), and, prior to 1985, she was a partner in a Savannah, Georgia law firm. With her husband, Albert Scardino, Marjorie founded and published the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, The Georgia Gazette. Marjorie is a non-executive director of Nokia Corporation and a member of a number of charitable and advisory boards, including The MacArthur Foundation and The Carter Center. In 2010 she was named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

The V&A’s mission statement is ‘To be the world’s leading museum of art and design; enriching people’s lives by promoting knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the designed world.’ The V&A is sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and is a charity exempt from registration under the Charities Act of 1993. It operates at arm’s length from the Government and is governed by a board of Trustees appointed by the Prime Minister.
Trustees of the V&A give their services on an honorary basis but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in selection or reappointment processes. In accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for political activity in the United Kingdom in the past five years to be made public. Dame Marjorie has declared no political activity.
