Statement on President Goodluck Jonathan meeting with PM
Leaders discussed key growth sectors, including oil and gas and ensuring maximum investment from other countries in Nigeria's energy sector.
A Downing Street spokesperson has issued a statement following President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria’s meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron in Downing Street.
The spokesperson said:
The Prime Minister welcomed President Goodluck Jonathan to Downing Street yesterday.
They discussed growing trade ties between Nigeria and the UK, which they were pleased to note had increased by 40% in 2012. They discussed key growth sectors, including oil and gas and how to ensure the Nigerian Petroleum Bill encouraged maximum investment from other countries in Nigeria’s energy sector. The Prime Minister offered the UK’s support to help President Jonathan tackle theft from oil pipelines.
They also discussed how we could work together to ensure stability in Mali, including UK support through the EU training mission and the Nigerian contribution to the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA). The President also set out efforts to ensure stability in Northern Nigeria, and both expressed shock and dismay at the recent tragic attacks on health workers in Kano.
