The Prime Minister has appointed Ms Penny Hughes and George Iacobescu Esq CBE to the Board of the British Museum with effect from 1 July 2007 for a period of four years.
Biographical Details:
Ms Penny Hughes is currently a Director of Reuters plc, Home Retail Group plc, SEB (Banking) in Sweden, and Gap Inc USA. Ms Hughes is also adviser to Bridgepoint Venture Capital and President of the UK Advertising Association. She graduated from Sheffield University and joined Procter & Gamble, first as a technologist, then in the sales and marketing department. She was then recruited to the Milk Marketing Board, and then joined Coca-Cola as a Brand Manager. By 1989, having overseen the merger of Coca-Cola UK and Schweppes, she was appointed Commercial Director, aged 29. In 1993, at the age of 33 she became President of Coca-Cola UK and Ireland. In 1995 Penny Hughes left Coca-Cola to develop her portfolio of interests. She has held a number of non-executive director positions including The Body Shop plc, Vodafone plc, Enodis (formerly Berisford plc) and Trinity Mirror plc.
Ms Penny Hughes holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years.
Mr George Iacobescu CBE is Chief Executive Officer of Canary Wharf Group (CWG), a Property Development and Management company with assets of £6.7 billion which has developed 1.0 million square metres in East London with a further 1.1 million square metres to follow. Mr Iacobescu is a Co-Chairman of Teach First, Director of London First, Director of Gateway to London and on the Advisory Board of the UK Academy of Finance. He is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute. He was appointed Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen in 2003. Mr Iacobescu is a graduate in Civil and Industrial Engineering from Bucharest, Romania.
Mr Iacobescu holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years

The Museum was looking for people with experience of retail or commercial industry and construction or property development.
The British Museum holds in trust for the nation and the world a collection of art and antiquities from ancient and living cultures. Housed in one of Britain’s architectural landmarks, the collection is one of the finest in existence, spanning two million years of human history. The Board of Trustees of the British Museum has statutory duties under the British Museum Act 1963 and Museums and Galleries Act 1992 for the general management and control of the Museum and for the appointment of the director.

The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
The appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appoints are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
