Following his appointment as Prime Minister in Buckingham Palace, Mr Brown told reporters in Downing Street he felt greatly privileged to be granted "this great opportunity". He added that he had "heard the need for change" and would "continue to listen and learn from the British people".

The PM indicated that his focus would be on the NHS, schools, affordable housing, restoring trust in government and "extending the British way of life". Work would begin on building "a new government with new priorities", he said.

"Britain can be the great global success story of this century…there is no weakness in Britain today that cannot be overcome by the strength of the British people.

"Now let the work of change begin."

Mr Brown replaces former Prime Minister Tony Blair who offered his resignation to the Queen shortly after 13:00 BST.
