PM pledges action on hospital infections

17 October 2007

Doctor and patientThe Prime Minister has promised a "deep clean" of hospitals to combat the problem of MRSA and C.difficile infections.

Responding to MPs during Prime Minister’s Questions, Gordon Brown said that the Government was in the process of implementing "very special measures" including the setting up of isolation wards and the recruitment of 3,000 matrons. Around £100 million was being spent to fight C.difficile and the ’superbug’ MRSA.

The Prime Minister denied that targets in hospitals were to blame for failures at institutions such as Maidstone General hospital. The solution to the issue of infections lay in "investment and reform", he said.
