Prime Minister announces UK Turkey partnership

23 October 2007

The PM has announced a UK Turkey strategic partnership to boost trade, security, economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

In a Downing Street press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, Gordon Brown said that the partnership would include closer security ties aimed at combatting the threat of terrorism - including the separatist Kurdish group PKK. Other measures include the building of a British university in Turkey and the joint construction of industrial zones in the southern Iraqi port of Basra.

During the press conference the PM reiterated his support for Turkey’s accession to the European Union. He said he hoped that talks on Turkey joining the EU could "move forward" at the next EU Council summit scheduled for December.
