The Prime Minister has today re-appointed Mr Jan Kopernicki as a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum for a period of four years from 24 November 2007.
Biographical Notes
Jan Kopernicki was educated at King Edward’s School Birmingham and the University of Leicester, where he graduated in Biological Sciences. He is a Member of the Institute of Biology, a Chartered Biologist, and holds the certified diploma in Accounting and Finance of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.
Mr Kopernicki has had a long career with Shell, has included assignments in International Chemicals, Supply, Life Sciences, Finance, Marine, Corporate Planning, Total Quality/Change Management and e-business. He is currently Vice President Shipping, and a Director of Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited. Before joining Shell Trading he headed the shipping activity of Shell Oil Company, based in Houston.
Mr Kopernicki is also active in a variety of other shipping industry bodies, including the UK Chamber of Shipping and the UK P&I Club. He is joint Chair of the UK Shipping Defence Advisory Committee, Chair of the Oil Companies’ International Marine Forum and of the UK Committee of Det Norske Veritas, a Member of the American Bureau of Shipping, and of both the General Committee and the Classification Committee of Lloyd’s Register.

The National Maritime Museum’s mission is to illustrate the importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and their relationship with people. Its responsibilities are safeguarding and enhancing its assets which are collections, expertise in the collections and subject area and the buildings. The Museum seeks to spread the benefits of those assets by maximising access and interpretation for users, satisfying stakeholders and through effective organisation and sound financial management. Trustees of the National Maritime Museum are not remunerated.
Appointments are made on merit and in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Political activity plays no part in the selection process. However in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Jan Kopernicki has declared no political activity.
