Gordon Brown has emphasised the importance of raising the education leaving age to 18 and increasing the number of apprenticeships available for young people.
Speaking to MPs in the House of Commons today, the PM said that raising the education leaving age will help provide various kinds of training and apprenticeships, including in-job training, in addition to academic learning. "Raising the education leaving age is absolutely vital for the future of our country", he said.
The expansion of apprenticeship placements, which will rise to 500,000 by 2010, is at the centre of a skills and learning programme announced on 16 November. Total spending on learning and skills is expected to rise to £12.3 billion a year by 2010/11.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families will publish a Children’s Plan in December, setting out a ten-year strategy for children and young people growing up in England.
