PM's December Press Conference - opening remarks

The United Kingdom is in a strong position to manage the financial uncertainty caused by the credit crunch, the PM has said.
Speaking to journalists during his monthly press conference, the PM said that a combination of sound fundamentals and low inflation would help the UK "weather the global financial storm".

Britain one of "great global leaders" - PM

In a speech to the Confederation of British Industry in London, Mr Brown said that it was imperative to equip people with the skills and education they need to play a role in a changing economy. The PM stressed the importance of the Government's plans to expand apprenticeships and increase the education leaving age from 16 to 18.

The Prime Minister has promised "a new type of politics" in an announcement of plans to broaden consultation in government decisions.
In a speech to the National Council of Voluntary Organisations in London, Gordon Brown said that with the new political season starting this autumn, it could no longer be "business as usual".
Unveiling Mandela's statue

The Prime Minister has unveiled a statue of Nelson Mandela in a ceremony in Parliament Square. In his speech, Mr Brown said it would act as a "beacon of hope" and showed the world that "no injustice can last forever".
