Royal Commission re-appointments

The Queen has been pleased to approve the re-appointments of Sir John Lawton CBE FRS as Chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for a further term of three years with effect from 1 April 2008. Professor Nicholas Cumpsty, Professor Peter Liss and Professor Judith Petts have also been re-appointed as members of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for a term of three years with effect from 1 March 2008.

Biographical Notes

Sir John Lawton was President of the Council of the British Ecological Society from 2005 to 2007. He was Chief Executive of Natural Environment Research Council, October 1999 - March 2005 and Director (and founder) of Natural Environment Research Council Centre for Population Biology at Imperial College, Silwood Park 1989 - 1999. He was a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution 1990 - 1996.

Professor Nicholas Cumpsty Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College Chief Technologist, Rolls-Royce plc, 2000-2005. He was Professor of Aerothermal Technology and Director of the Whittle Laboratory, University of Cambridge from1989 to 1999.

Professor Peter Liss has been Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia since1985. He was Chair of the Scientific Committee of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme from 1993 to1997 and a Member of NERC Council 1990-1995. He is an Independent Member of the Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology and Chair of the Royal Society Global Environmental Research Committee. He is Chair of the European Research Council Advanced Awards Panel in Earth System Science.

Professor Judith Petts is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer) at the University of Birmingham. She has also been Professor of Environmental Risk Management, University of Birmingham since 1999 and a Member of NERC Council from 2000 to 2006. She is a Member of the EPSRC Societal Issues Panel. She is also a Member of the Higher Education Funding Councils’ Research Assessment Exercise Panel in Geography and Environmental Studies and a Member of OSI Sciencewise Strategy Group. She is a Member of the Environmental Advisory Group, Veolia Environmental Service and Former Specialist Advisor House of Commons Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee and House of Lords Sub-Committee C.
