Gordon Brown hopeful of Darfur talks
30 April 2008
The Prime Minister has said he is "hopeful" of hosting talks in London with rebel and Government representatives from Sudan on the issue of Darfur.
Addressing MPs at today's Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Brown said he was pressing the Sudanese Foreign Minister to come to the table with rebel groups in a bid to obtain a ceasefire and work towards a political settlement in the region.
The PM added that he had offered London as a centre for discussions and was seeking the involvement of the United Nations and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in the proposed meeting.
In a statement earlier this month, the Prime Minister promised to work with the international community and others to "pressure all sides to agree a ceasefire, start peace talks, and facilitate the rapid deployment of UNAMID".
