Heroes "should be recognised"

Local people who do "great work" in their communities should be recognised by receiving an honour by The Queen, the Prime Minister said on television earlier today.

Appearing on "This Morning" on itv1, Mr Brown said that the honours system should be more about what's happening "on the ground" in local communities, and invited more people to nominate colleagues and friends to be recognised.

A new campaign encouraging nominations of local heroes started in January of this year. The honours system YouTube channel shows people who have been awarded honours, and the difference they make to their local community.
