A new White Paper on education has now been launched. Tony Blair called it a ‘pivotal moment’, saying that schools in Britain were making good progress but that the time has come to ‘lift our ambitions’.

The main focus is on offering more power and choice for parents, as well as personalised lessons and improved discipline.

City Academies

Tony Blair at the City of London Academy 12 September Described by the government as a ‘new type of school’, City Academies are located in disadvantaged areas and often replace failing schools.

10 new academies opened in September of 2005, bringing the total to 27. The government is aiming to open 200 by 2010.
