Cut out teachers pour into Number 10

26 June 2006

One of the entries to the My Friend Needs a Teacher project Kind-hearted kids have been getting their creative juices flowing by taking part in a campaign to help the world’s poorest children.

Youngsters from schools across the UK have been making cut-out "teachers", with each one representing a real teacher needed in the developing world.

They have been sending in hundreds of their creations to Number 10, made up of drawings, photographs and a host of other materials.

The PM says he thinks the creations are "great" and is urging Britain’s children to "continue to make their voices heard".

The "My Friend Needs a Teacher" project is organised by the Global Campaign for Education.

They promote education as a basic human right, and urge governments to provide free, compulsory public basic education for all people.

Tony Blair and other world leaders made a pledge at the G8 summit last year to provide good quality primary education for all by 2015.

He particularly wants girls to get the same access as boys.

In a speech today, the PM announced the creation of a new panel of world leaders to help keep the Gleneagles promises on helping Africa.
