UK faces "major decision" on energy - PM
9 January 2008
The UK faces a "major decision" on the future of its energy supplies, the Prime Minister has said.
Speaking to MPs in Parliament during PMQs, Mr Brown said the supply of energy needed to be "secure" in order to avoid dependence on foreign countries and imported resources such as oil.
The PM said:
"I hope we will be able to make a decision about this that will protect the long-term interests of the country. Without a decision on this and on renewable fuels then we will become more dependent on foreign sources of supply."
A White Paper published in May last year set out the Government's strategy on energy and climate change. The paper included a commitment to a consultation on the role of nuclear power in a low carbon economy that closed in October.
Business Secretary John Hutton will make an announcement in Parliament tomorrow on the Government's response to the nuclear power consultation, the PM said.
